Radiofrequency microneedling treatments are designed for the face and body. Using tiny needles, thousands of microscopic punctures are made in the epidermis of the skin to trigger the body’s natural healing response. This boosts the production of collagen and elastin, the two proteins that keep the skin looking supple, smooth, and healthy. In addition, microneedling creates channels in the skin, allowing topical products to reach deeper into the skin and work more effectively. When combined with radiofrequency, this allows for penetration into the deeper layers of skin to produce more dramatic results when compared to microneedling alone. There are also specific needles that infuse various active ingredients i.e., plasma or hyaluronic acid during the treatment.
Prior to your treatment, we advise coming in for a consultation at Tamar Skin Clinic to determine whether this treatment is right for you. To keep you comfortable throughout the procedure, we will apply a topical anaesthetic cream to the skin around 30 minutes before treatment.
Once your skin is prepped, the device handpiece will be passed over the skin, allowing the fine needles to penetrate. Once the microneedles reach the desired depth, radiofrequency energy will be delivered. Many patients describe feeling a mild burning or stinging sensation as the needles are inserted into the skin; however, this is generally well tolerated. You can expect your treatment to take around 45 minutes, after which you are free to resume your usual activities. For best results, you will require three to four treatments spaced six weeks apart.
RF treatments are highly versatile, can treat various skin concerns and is suitable for all skin types, anywhere on the body, any time of year. Some of the concerns treated by RF include:

Thanks to the numbing cream applied before treatment, you should not feel any significant pain during your RF treatment. Either way, the treatment is relatively short, and any mild discomfort is usually well-tolerated.
Collagen and elastin production takes time. In the days after your RF microneedling treatment, you may notice that your skin looks smoother and has a visible glow, although it will take some time for your final results to appear.
You can expect to begin seeing results around four to six weeks after treatment, with optimal results becoming evident at around 12 weeks following your final session. Keep in mind that results are not permanent, and annual maintenance treatments are required to improve your skin in the long term.
Following your treatment, you may experience some pinpoint bleeding, swelling, redness and skin irritation. Don’t worry; these side effects are usually quite mild and should clear up within two to three days. However, if you do notice any unusual changes in your skin following treatment, be sure to get in touch.

What are Microneedling treatments?
Micro-needling is also known as collagen induction therapy. Micro-needling involves piercing the skin with ultrafine needles producing millions of channels to trigger our own skin’s natural healing responses. Not only will this result in collagen production but also enhance the absorption of nutrients into the skin.
The increased production of collagen and elastin result in resurfacing, retexturizing and overall skin renewal anywhere on the body, from hard to reach areas such as around eyes, eyelids, earlobes, neck, lips, nose or larger areas of neck and decolletage, stomach, and legs for stretch mark treatment.

How many treatments are recommended for rejuvenation, acne scarring and stretch marks? Well that depends on the depth of treatment. As a general guide:
- Rejuvenation*: 3-6 treatments 4-8 weeks apart
- Acne scarring: 4-6 treatments 4-8 weeks apart
- Stretch marks: 4-8 treatments 6-8 weeks apart
- Pigmentation: 4-6 treatments 2-4 weeks apart
Microneedling is virtually pain-free.
For optimal results, an appropriate preparation regime will be determined by your Clinician to prepare, strengthen and fortify the skin (especially for thin or delicate skin areas).
The regime will be for a period of 2-3 weeks before and after the microneedling treatments.
This will include the use of a Vitamin A cream and an antioxidant serum containing Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Ferulic Acid.
Your clinician will be able to advise you on when to schedule your treatment appropriately.
Typically, you will see results after the first treatment. Lasting and more significant results will become visible after 3 to 6 treatments (spaced 2-8 weeks apart). The condition of your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months after a course of treatments, especially when combined with the recommended post-treatment care.
Generally, no, but you may experience facial redness for 12-48 hours after the treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after the treatment. Application of Cover Recover™ will seal and heal the skin and cover any redness for an immediate return to work. This is available at the Clinic.
Check with your clinician before proceeding with a microneedlingprocedure if you are: pregnant, using blood thinners, such as warfarin, or if you are susceptible to keloiding skin. Do not treat over keloid scars, active problematic skin, such as severe solar keratosis, raised moles/warts, eczema, or psoriasis.

What to expect
The process involves taking some of your own blood and running this blood through a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich plasma. The plasma is then injected into the skin. Overall, the entire procedure takes less than an hour.
PRP results in an increased number of collagen fibres, enhances the skin’s elasticity and texture, as well as decreases hair loss while increasing hair volume and strength.
The Treatment

- A separation procedure extracts & concentrates the desired body substances (PRP – platelet rich plasma).

Medically Indicated and Facial Rejuvenation Peel Treatments
At the Tamar Skin Clinic, we use a combination of therapies to reduce the discolouration associated with skin damaged through sun exposure. Other benefits of our treatments can include the reduced appearance of wrinkles, improved skin tone and texture, softening of acne scars and blemishes. Though we primarily treat the face, neck and décolletage areas, other parts of the body can be attended to if required.
Treatment Options
You can choose to have a chemical peel or a combination of this and healing light therapy. Reading through the details below may help you to work out your preference.
You will notice the discussion of a particular brand of peel in this pamphlet. Please note that our choice of treatments is based on clinical research and experience, with no influence from drug companies or salespeople.
Glycolic acid peels are a form of Alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), a type of superficial chemical peel. Application of this acid causes dead skin cells to loosen and break away, exfoliating and smoothing the skin. Peels are tailored to the individuals skin sensitivity and reaction to each application. The first application is usually a ‘tester’ to ascertain the strength of the next peel, and so on.
Some people may need a stronger acid than others to achieve the same results, others will only need minimal treatments. The recommended quantity is typically 4 peels, with 2 weeks in between each.
Procedure
- Your skin is cleaned with a pre-peel cleanser to remove make up and oils
- Glycolic acid peel is applied for up to10 – 15 minutes -this will vary.
- Neutraliser is sprayed over the face to stop the peel process
- You wash your face at this time to remove any further residue
- If opting to do so, the phototherapy light is applied
- A serum is applied to speed recovery
- At home, further application of serum and smoothing cream are used to help enhance benefits of the peel
The salicylic acid peel is a superficial depth peel and is a standalone treatment with no phototherapy. It is most effective for acne and darker skin types. It is normal to feel a stinging sensation when the peel is applied. During recovery, the skin can be reddened with mild flaking. The strength and frequency of subsequent peels will be dictated by your reaction to the first peel. Some people find one treatment is adequate, some benefit from a second treatment, 2- 4 weeks apart.
Procedure
- Your skin is cleaned with acetone to remove make-up and oils
- Barrier ointment is applied around the eyes, nose, and mouth
- 2-3 layers of acid are applied to the skin with gauze
The Combined Peel is a medium depth peel and is a standalone treatment with no phototherapy. Unlike our other peels you will have a distinct change in the colour of your skin during recovery. Initially it will be tight and red and then progress to a shade of brown which then slowly peels off within around one week. Some people find one treatment is adequate, some benefit from a second treatment. Your doctor will discuss your requirements with you at the week review visit post treatment.
Procedure
- Your skin is cleaned with a pre-peel cleanser to remove make up and oils Barrier ointment is applied around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Multiple layers of acid are applied with gauze to the skin, usually 2 – 5 layers.
- History of herpes simplex or cold sores (a treatment may be provided to avoid a breakout)
- History of allergies
- Recent exposure to the sun or other UV radiation and heat including heat lamps or tanning beds.
- Currently taking anti-coagulants (drugs for blood thinning)
- Currently taking immune supressing agents.
- Currently using an oral retinoid (should be discontinued 6 months prior to a peel procedure)
- Currently using topical retinoid (maybe discontinued 1-2 weeks prior) History of atopic skin reactions, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea or other skin sensitivities
- Recent hair processing: removal (waxing, depilatories, laser, IPL), bleaching, dying, permanent wave or straightening treatment
- Recent cosmetic procedure: peel, microdermabrasion, laser or light therapy, chemical or mechanical exfoliation, etc.
- Tobacco usePeels are not recommended during pregnancy or while nursing
The TCA peel is considered the gold standard for sun damage and freckles and can be used for post acne scarring and general rejuvenation. It is only appropriate for lighter skin type. – (Reference: Rubin, M. (2006) Chemical Peels. Philadelphia: Elsevier Saunders).

Recovery
Initially your skin may be red and feel sensitive. Some patients experience stinging, itching, mild pain or discomfort, tightness, puffiness, crusting and peeling of the superficial layer of the skin. These are all normal and expected results.
You may notice that your skin feels rough for a couple of days after the peel due to enhanced exfoliation/light peeling.
Note: Skin will be especially sensitive to sunlight and other sources of UV light (tanning beds etc). Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen.
